Improving Schools – Kenya

To improve the situation of considerably disadvantaged children in Kisii District in Nyanza Province.

These children face (a) very poor school sanitation facilities leading to high incidents of diarrhoea and lack of safe provision for girl pupils (b) classrooms in poor state of repair, e.g. leaky roofs, muddy floors (local rainfall is very high) (c) vulnerability (many being orphans or carers for sick parents, due to high rates of HIV/AIDS) (d) poverty (e) poor learning environment and lack of school engagement.

These factors cause children to stay away from school and fall behind with their education. Their life prospects diminish. Many resort to street begging and/or hard agricultural work.  Girls from age 5 are subject to traditional practices and abuses such as female circumcision (FGM).
